When the 1875 Milam County Jailhouse grew too crowded in the 1890s, it was removed to make room for larger facilities. In March 1895, the Milam County Commissioners awarded a contract to the Pauly Jail Building and Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri, for the construction of a larger prison.

Born on Christmas Day in 1908 in the small Texas community of Gause, Texas, Moore embodied the hard-working values of his hometown. At 5’11” and 150 pounds, he wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, but he had something that couldn’t be measured—grit.
For nearly 80 years, the Milam County Jail stood as an unshakable symbol of law and order in Cameron. But for those locked behind its iron bars, it was more than just a prison—it was a puzzle waiting to be solved. Built to be one of the most secure jails in Texas, it still became the setting for some of the most daring (and often comical) escape attempts in the region’s history.
Before highways and interstates, railroads were the pulse of progress in Texas. They didn’t just connect cities—they built them. And in the heart of Milam County, the tracks that converged in Cameron shaped the town’s destiny.
Known as the calaboose, this tiny structure was built in 1892 and served as a temporary holding cell for those who found themselves in trouble.
What began in 1912 as an initiative to teach young women essential farming and canning skills has grown into the modern-day 4-H program, impacting millions of youth across the nation.
